Hi, my name’s Ben Buist and welcome to my first edition of Everything E3. This magazine will feature information about E3 which is the biggest gaming convention in the world. The information required will be limited due to the size of the magazine however it will contain information on the most interesting parts of the convention.
I want to help inform and entertain you. The first page is obviously going to be a title page because every magazine has one, the second page however will contain an basic introduction and overview to the convention that is if you haven't heard of it before. The third page is where the magazine starts to get interesting, this page will contain the newest most highlighted reveal. The fourth page will contain the newest and most featured indie game, for those of you who aren’t into mainstream gaming. The fifth page will contain an interview with an experienced gamer who will give us his opinions on this years E3. The sixth and final page will contain information about the most interesting game at E3 and its developers.
My most favoured article of the magazine will be the article on the newest highlighted game of the convention, so this will most likely be the one you came here for.
I bet your wondering “who is this guy, thinking he can give an accurate recap on E3”. Well to answer that I am a guy who has played games for a many number of years and a few years ago I discovered E3, so since then I have been a follower of the convention and I have a good idea of how the convention runs now. This experience hopefully proves to you that I am excited and interested in the convention. I hope you enjoy my magazine.
Thanks,
Ben Buist
Page 3 Introduction to E3
E3, that convention that lots of gamers go to. Yes though this is true, the more technical introduction is that E3 stands for Electronic Entertainment Expo. The Expo is usually held in a very big convention center such as the Los Angeles convention center. E3 was first put on in 1995 when a group called the Entertainment software association who is an association within the video games industy, composed of the biggest games publishers. Since then it has provided a way for game developers and gamers to talk, mix and present games. However mostly nowadays people go to see the huge extravagant presentations that the big games companies put on for there newer or yet to be released games.
The Electronic Entertainment Expo is now attended by 52,000 people with over 300 exhibitors. E3 is has main room and meeting rooms. In the main rooms there are hundreds of different booths with different playable games, merchandise and celebrities. Every booth is unique and emaculatelly designed, for example the forza 5 booth was design and coloured in the xbox and forza colours and sitting in the entrance to the booth was McLaren P1 super car, what better way to sell a racing game than with a million pound car.
Scheduled throughout the convention is main events, usually this consist of shows that Xbox, Sony and other major game corporations. These events are supposed to be the highlights and in most cases they are especially the Xbox and Sony ones. This is because as every gamer knows they have a power struggle and compete in every aspect including these presentations, making it extremely enjoyable to see the new innovative ideas that they will be bringing to the games industry.
I hope that this introduction has helped any of you reader who havent a clue what the Electronic Entertainment Expo is.
Page 4 Most highlighted release Fallout 4
Fallout 4, what more do I have to say. Its the game we've all been waiting for, to fuel that fallout addiction. No but seriously Fallout 4 was the most Highlighted game at E3 which doesnt suprise me as Fallout is a huge game franchises, however what does surprise me is that it was most highlighted because Bethesda (Fallout 4's game developers) decided to showcase some in-game Fallout 4 footage. How does a game franchise get to the point were there fanbase is so die hard that they would attend a major games convention just to see some in-game footage of a game that comes out in November. Well this is how. The first Fallout game (Fallout 1) was released in 1997 and since then the game developers have worked on Fallout 2 , 3, 4, New Vegas and Fallout shelter. Thats 6 Fallout games over 18 years. For a game franchise that isnt a sports game or first person shooter 6 games over that time shows incredible dedication to the franchise and its fans.
Fallout 4's E3 in game footage trailer included many different aspects of how the game play will look and feel. For your benefit I will gave a some what brief recap on the Fallout trailer presented at E3. I will talk about the most important and my favorite aspects that can be seen within the trailer. First of all the introduction of the trailer tells us that the game will start before the war occurred and the bombs were dropped, this is incredible as none of the other fallout games have given us the opportunity to explore this aspect of the fallout lore. We then get the character creation which is'nt anything new to the Fallout franchise however the creation included in Fallout 4 seems to be so indepth that you can sculpt and taylor the appearance of your player character to what suits you. After this we see some gameplay of the player character roaming around the house, we even get to see the iconic nuka cola that we Fallout fans love and adore. The first story relevent occuarance is the interaction between the main player character and an npc who talk about the fallout shelter which evedently becomes important later on, during this interaction the player get the oppotunity to apply skill points to there classic RPG stat lines, strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck. The player then encounters the next storyline event. The news tell us that the bombs have been dropped and that the main characters family must get to the vault. The player then runs to the vault to take refuge, the player is being lowered down into the vault as the first bomb goes off. Obviously the character survives this, when the character emerges from the vault to a destroyed, ruined apocalypse-esque world. The player roams for a while and then returns to the place he once lived to find his household robot still roaming around, after a interaction with the robot the player finds out that they have been stuck in the vault for 200 years. I know this may sound a bit far fetched but remember its a sci-fi, apocalypse game. After this we get to see some more of the environment as the player runs around. We meet the dog who will be your companion through the game. During this part we get to see the V.A.T.S mechanic back in action again and for those of you reading who don't play Fallout, play Fallout. The trailer then goes into showing off the open world.
So there you have it, you have now just read and visualised the E3 Fallout experience without having to actually be there.
Page 5 Best new indie game showcase
The best new indie game, well this is obviously a controversial subject as it will be a matter of personal preference so I will include two of my favorite from E3 and I will try to justify and explain why I'm interested in them so much.
The first of these games being Enter the Gungeon. The first thing I have to say about this game is just 'Enter the Gungeon' is a name that just sounds enjoyable, personally when I look for and indie game I look for dungeons and guns. Secondly Enter the Gungeon is a Rouge-lite (not to be confused with rogue-like) bullet hell, dungeon crawling game that features a procedurally generated world. one issue I always find in rogue-lite games is there isnt enough action or variety in action, for instance when I play Binding of Isaac which is by the way one of my favourite indie games, I find that the only thing that makes me want to play less is when the games action and combat seems predictable and tiresome. Having a game with an almost infinite amount of situations during combat and the ability to manipulate and change that combat in a completely random way makes Enter the Gungeon so irresistible to me as a player. Also who doesn't love a good dodge roll maneuver to get yourself out of trouble. Another aspect of Enter the Gungeon that I really thought was creative and unique was this idea that the developers really wanted a real bullet hell game that shows off everything that the genre has to offer. For instance just the aesthetic of the game tells us that it is a bullet hell game.
The second indie game that really caught my eye at E3 was Gang Beasts. Gang beasts is all about the comedy of throwing, shoving, pulling, really just anything to get your friends to fall of a various arena whether is be a suspended cleaning scaffold or a commercial hauling truck on the move. Gang Beasts to me looks like a game that you could bust out at a party and would cause a good amount of laughter and anger, to me the perfect party. The developers are a group called Boneleaf, based in Sheffield, UK and unlike most major game developers nowadays, the indie developers such as Boneleaf are just genuine people making a game out of a couple years of experimentation and fun, to give gamers a hilariously fun party game. Now for technicals, the game features and amazing custom procedural generation for characters, an incredible variation in character movement, hand grab mechanics that include climbing, lifting, throwing and dragging, and finally there is a wide variety in contextual hazards. Honestly though who wouldnt enjoy fighting there best friend on a ferris wheel with gelatinous characters that are unpredictable and extremely clumsy.
I personally believe that Gang Beasts could be the next twister. When played in a group of 4 Gang Beasts is an insanely humorous experience.
Page 6 Interview
1. Did you go to or watch the live E3 broadcast, if so why do you?
I watched it E3 live, because I find it more comfortable.
2. What general impression did E3 have on you this year compared to last?
I felt like this years E3 was a lot less fun than last years because of most of the things announced were not of any interest to me.
3.Out of everything you saw what are you most looking forward to and why?
The thing I am most looking forward to is Fallout 4 as I have recently been playing through Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4 looks to be a newer more updated version of both.
4. How do you think the Electronic Entertainment Expo has progressed over the years?
Its always been a hub for major content and releases and I think its format works really well, however I do find myself getting bored at most of the presentations as a lot of these presentations don't engage me well enough to actually want me to listen. The only company to have done it right and engaged my attention throughout was Nintendo with there Nintendo direct as they are able to spark up all there down time between announcements will videos and sketches. I am a fairly recent viewer of the Electronic Entertainment Expo.
5. Whos your favourite game developers?
Valve is my favourite game developer because there games are the only games I really enjoy to play on a regular basis and I invest a lot of time into there franchises.
6. Out of ten how was E3 2015?
7/10.
There we have it an experienced opinion on the biggest games convention from an expert.
Page 7 Devs with the most interesting new release.
Media Molecule announced at E3 a new game called Dreams. Apperantly according to Media Molecule "Dreams™ is a space where you go to play and experience the dreams of Media Molecule and our community. It’s also a space in which to create your own dreams, whether they’re games, art, films, music or anything in-between and beyond." . To be honest I don't think that this game will have that level of brilliance however the game sure does look amazing and the concept for the game is flawless. Media Molecule have had previous success with the Little Big Planet franchise and through the development of those game they have uncovered there creativity in which gave them the idea for Dreams. The game will only be available for PS4 and the game will be published by Sony.
Dreams is all about painting and sculpting your own ideas into visuals. This creativity in a game gives the creative side of Sonys fan base a platform to express there creativity in anyway they wish. Dreams will be the first of its kind, creating a new genre for games and hopefully opening up the games industry to the creative fanbase.
I think this game looks extremely interesting. It offers a very large array of options within the game and I personally think that anything that inspires peoples creativity is a good thing. However I have doubts about the games capabilities in full fillings its concept. If Media Molecule get this game wrong then they will let a lot of people down. So i'm not going to be expecting much out of this game but I hope that they surprise me.
In conclusion I think that Dreams is a very interesting game, that offers the creative community another media to experiment on. The game offers a surrealism that other games cant.
However I think that the game if not properly developed could let down a whole community of people.
